My four-year-old daughter is going through back-to-back ear infections.

Q. Dear Terry, “My four-year-old daughter is going through back-to-back ear infections. She’s so miserable and I want to help her feel better. Is there something natural I can give her to help clear up the ear infections and prevent them from coming back?” – Julie W., Minot, SD

A. Dear Julie, Ear infections (otitis media) are the number one reason that parents bring their kids to the doctor. That’s not surprising, since five out of six children have had at least one ear infection by the time they’re three years old. Ear infections can be serious, and reoccurring ear infections can be problematic for kids and parents. Fortunately, propolis may provide worried parents with an answer.

Clinical studies show that propolis can reduce the duration and severity of ear infections, and prevent them from developing into added complications like sore throat or recurring viral upper respiratory tract infections. Propolis may reduce the need for antibiotics – although it can be used along with them – because it stops ear infections from coming back. And I think one of the best aspects of propolis is that it’s been shown to be safe and effective for children from 6 months to 18 years old and beyond.

I prefer propolis that comes from a controlled and managed bee population, so the material provides consistent levels of bacteria, virus, and fungi fighting compounds. Look for a propolis that uses a patented method to filter out inactive resins and beeswax. There is a chewable form of propolis featuring a plant-based enhanced absorption system, called gamma cyclodextrin, that is a great option for children. I recommend one 100 mg chewable tablet per day for prevention and two chewable tablets per day during active infections. This unique propolis is also available in capsules. I would take 200 mg of propolis once per day for prevention and twice per day during active infections.

Healthy Regards!
